Champions League: Atletico defeat Chelsea in semi-final

Chelsea suffered Champions League heartache as Atletico Madrid set up a derby final with city rivals Real with a 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge.
A goalless first leg left the tie finely poised with a place in the May 24 Lisbon showpiece at stake against Jose Mourinho's former club, who emphatically ended Bayern Munich's title defence on Tuesday night.
"Champions of Europe, we've done it before," sang the home crowd as they urged the Blues on - and Fernando Torres gave Chelsea the lead against his former club.
But that was as good as it got for Mourinho's men. Adrian Lopez equalised just prior to half-time before Diego Costa's penalty and Arda Turan's tap-in set up an all-Madrid final.
It was Mourinho's fourth successive loss at the semi-final stage as the 2012 winners were eliminated and left to focus on their slim Premier League title hopes.
The Portuguese insisted he would stick to his defensive methods despite recent criticism - most fiercely coming from Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers after the Blues' win at Anfield - and selected six defenders in his starting XI, three of them full-backs.
Chelsea were quickly on the defensive and, after a fourth-minute Atletico corner, Koke's cross-cum-shot went over Mark Schwarzer, hit the bar and ricocheted off Gary Cahill on to the roof of the net.
Cesar Azpilicueta began on the right wing, with Eden Hazard, who proved his fitness with some scintillating early runs, supporting Torres up front, but Chelsea struggled to test Thibaut Courtois.

Panic as Aero Contractors aircraft mistakenly lands at Enugu Government House, three crew members arrested

There was a short period of tension at the Enugu Government House on Tuesday as a helicopter belonging to Aero Contractors mistakenly landed at the Governor’s Lodge.
The erroneous landing caused panic among the residents and staff who mistook it for terrorists.
Three occupants of the helicopter – two pilots and an Engineer were immediately detained for alleged security breaches.
DailyPost learnt that security men at the Governor’s lodge took positions on sighting the helicopter since the mission of the occupants was not known to them.
Governor Sullivan Chime was said to be present in the lodge when the helicopter landed suddenly on the carpet-grassed open space in front of the lodge.
The three occupants were immediately arrested and later handed over to the State Police Command by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Fidelis Ogarabe, Chief Security Officer to Governor Sullivan Chime for interrogation.
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Chukwudi Achife, in a statement on the issue, said: “At about 10.30 am today (Tuesday), a helicopter bearing the markings of Aero Contractors landed without permission at the Governor’s lodge.
“The mission of the visitors was unknown to the government. After preliminary inquiries, the Chief Security Officer to the Governor, Mr. Fidelis Ogarebe, handed the three occupants of the aircraft – two pilots and one Engineer over to the State Police Command for further investigations”.
Sir Umeoji represented Aguata North Central in the old Anambra State House of Assembly in 1983. He died recently and his funeral programme commenced on Tuesday with a valedictory session held in his honour by members of the Enugu State House of Assembly.
“The valedictory session was held for him this morning and after the event presided over by the Speaker, Chief Eugene Odoh, the casket was rather conveyed to Anambra State in a motorcade since the helicopter did not land at the Legislative building which is about 200 meters away from the Government House”, spokesman of the State Assembly, Mr. Jonas Ugwuanyi said.
He said that the House of Assembly premises was cleared for the helicopter to land but it could not be seen until the end of the valedictory session.
But unknown to the lawmakers, the helicopter had landed in the Governor’s lodge where the crew members were detained for allegedly breaching the security of the Government House.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said when contacted that the command had commenced investigations with a view to finding out “why the aircraft landed there vis-à-vis who invited them, where they came from amongst other things”.
Security had been beefed up at the Government House since members of the pro-Biafra Movement, Biafra Zionist Federation, BZF, invaded the Enugu State seat of power at about 4.30am on March 8, 2014.
The children of the deceased second republic lawmaker including the current chairman of Aguata Local Government Area, Mr. Chukwuma Umeoji and his sister who is a senior staff of Zenith Bank were said to have contacted the Government House to seek the release of the helicopter and the crew members but their pleas were reportedly turned down as the Governor who was said to have been frightened by the strange visitors, reportedly directed that the incident be thoroughly investigated.

Borno Senators: Abducted Schoolgirls Have Been Relocated and Married by Their Captors

As Nigerians and the parents of the schoolgirls, who were kidnapped from their school in Chibok, Borno State, two weeks ago pray for their safe return, it has been revealed that the girls have been ferried across the Nigerian border to Cameroun, Chad and Niger and forcibly married by their captors.
Disclosing this yesterday during a solemn session of the Senate, during which senators struggled to hold back their emotions, their colleagues from Borno State narrated how the military failed to respond in a timely manner to information on the whereabouts of the abducted schoolgirls, resulting in their movement across the border and forced marriage to members of Boko Haram.
The narration followed a motion by Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, urging the security agencies to immediately rescue the victims, while calling on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), other countries as well as United Nations Security Council to assist Nigeria by deploying advanced technologies to rescue the adopted students.
The Senate condemned the abduction, called for prayers for the release of the abducted girls and urged governments at all levels to provide security for schools and public places in their areas.
Senator Ahmad Zanna (Borno Central) wondered why the military had not rescued the girls despite periodically feeding them with information about the movement of the captors with their victims from one location to the other until they eventually took them across the border to Niger, Chad and Cameroun.

Zanna, who revealed that he was informed that the girls had been married by their captors, said the girls had been divided into different groups and dispersed to different places, adding that it would be difficult to rescue 50 of them from one location at once.
Zanna, who said he was privy to information about their movement before they were eventually taken to neighbouring countries, added that he lost hope when security agencies did not act immediately on information that was given to them before the girls were ferried off.
According to him, the new base of the insurgents is Chikungudu, a village in Mate Local Government Area of Borno State, which he said the insurgents had recently captured after being driven away from the Sambisa forest.
He also disclosed that the insurgents could go to wherever they wanted with ease from their new location without being under any threat from the military because the place had become a safe haven for them.
“I have been constantly in touch with the security agencies, telling them the developments, the movement of the girls from one place to the other and then the splitting of the girls and eventually the marriage of these girls by the insurgents.
“What bothered me the most is that whenever I informed the military where these girls were, after two to three days, they were moved from that place to another. Still, I would go back and inform them on new developments.
“However, I lost hope two days ago when I found out that some of them were moved to Chad and Cameroun. Actually, some of them moved through the Mandara Mountain that is in Gwoza and some of them are just a stone throw from their barracks.
“Even now, as I am talking to you, some are in Kolofata, which is in Cameroun, about 15 kilometres or even less from the border, because one of the insurgents called somebody in Bama and said: ‘I just got married and I am now settling in Kolofata’; and then, three or four days ago, some Fulani men reported that they saw some girls being taken by boats into the island on Lake Chad and that some of them happened to be between Mate and Mungonu.
“Maybe, those ones might still be within Nigeria but that is the current and new base of the insurgents. They just took over that place less than a few week ago and that village is called Chikungudua. The place is the constituency of Senator Maina Maji.
“I informed the security agents about the developments. And from that place, they (the insurgents) can just go to either Chad or Cameroun because it is very open; there are no weeds in the lake and so they can go to anywhere. They have snatched all the boats around that area including the one for NNPC and so they are free to go anywhere without being chased by anybody.
“There are about 40 islands there and they have ejected most of the occupants of the islands and occupied the islands. What is most disturbing is that hitherto, Sambisa was their base and it was well known to the military and the Nigerian security services.
“After the abduction of those girls, they started moving out of Sambisa and even before then, I had been discussing with the military and they said they were going to attack that place, about 15 or 20 days ago. I don't know what delayed them.
“But eventually when they launched the attack, all the insurgents had already gone out of the place,” Zanna said.
He warned that unless the security agencies showed uncommon zeal to rescue the girls, hopes of their return were dimming by the day.
“These are the facts. So unless there is seriousness on the part of our military, we have no hope of getting those girls. Even if we are going to get them, we are going to get them in trickles, maybe getting two, three, four and five.
“They are now scattered, so it is not possible for us to get 50, 60,100 in one particular position. That is the position as at today,” he explained.
Contributing to the motion, Senator Ali Ndume (Borno South), who concurred that the military did not follow the directive given to them after the abduction, disclosed that when the insurgents arrived in the school, the girls had tried to hide but were lured into seven vehicles seemingly provided to rescue them by the insurgents disguised in army uniforms.
He said the girls thought the insurgents were soldiers who had come to evacuate them until they were taken into the forest.
According to him, when the girls were being taken away, the military were told to go west but they chose to face the east, thus making it easier for the captors to escape.
He also said it was sad that 15 days after the abduction, no single victim had been rescued, noting that the 53 girls who returned, escaped by their own efforts and were not rescued.
“We are 109 here. Imagine if one of these girls is your daughter. The school is a public school and as you know, it is poor people who send their children to public schools. So the school is made up of the children of the poor.
“These girls went there not only to get educated but to bring hope to their families. Something needs to be done. If we are serious, 15 days after, with proper equipment, we should have rescued some of these girls. The 53 who came back escaped when their vehicle broke down,” he said.
Ndume also expressed concern that despite the billions of naira that the Senate had approved to fund security, the military still lacked the necessary weaponry to prosecute the war against terror.

Nigerians’ll never support removal of fuel subsidy — ASUU

THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU said yesterday that Nigerians would never embrace any attempt by the Federal Government to remove fuel subsidy.

The academic union spoke through its national treasurer, Dr Ademola Aremu.
Speaking in a lecture entitled, “Clamour for fuel subsidy removal: In whose interest?”, at the pre-May Day lecture organised by journalists in Oyo State, he said government would not curry the favour of the union until knotty issues surrounding the petroleum industry were resolved.

According to him, subsidy could not be removed from fuel without tackling other policies and socio-economic issues which could re-ignite the faith of Nigerians in their leaders.

He said, “The starting point of this would be the removal of corruption which has become second nature to oil business in Nigeria, albeit a general characteristic of the business the world over. This could only be achieved through government accountability to its citizens.”

“Is it possible for government to give a near estimate of the crude oil being explored in Nigeria on daily, weekly or other such periodic basis? Can Nigerians be made aware of the amount of money invested in refining the crude oil produce?

Can the memoranda of understanding between the international oil companies and the Nigerian government be made public with the rules of engagement stated in black and white”.

Champions League: Real Madrid humble Bayern Munich to reach final

Real Madrid blew Bayern Munich away to reach the UEFA Champions League final with a 4-0 second leg victory which secured a 5-0 aggregate success.
Sergio Ramos took advantage of some woeful marking to head home twice from set pieces in the opening 20 minutes before Cristiano Ronaldo put the finishing touch to a devastating counter-attack in the 34th minute in a blistering opening half from the Spanish giants.
Ronaldo added a fourth with a late free-kick and the only downside for Carlo Ancelotti's side, who will face either city rivals Atletico Madrid or Chelsea and former boss Jose Mourinho in the Lisbon final next month, was the needless booking for midfielder Xabi Alonso which rules him out of the showpiece.
Pep Guardiola's reigning European champions had dominated possession in the first leg at Santiago Bernabeu last week, only to leave Spain with a 1-0 deficit after Karim Benzema struck.
Any hopes they had of working their way back into the tie were obliterated by a ruthless display from Real, who are targeting a record 10th European crown, although the Bundesliga champions were complicit in their own downfall.

'We Are Living In Very Bad Conditions' - Soldiers Fighting Against Boko Haram Complain

Soldiers stationed in the Northeast states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa which has come under incessant attacks by Boko Haram, are asking for policy of rotation to be put in place by the military so that new set of soldiers can come in to relieve the battle-weary ones.

The soldiers who pleaded anonymity criticized the practice of leaving them stationed for too long in the battlefields in the war against the insurgents while also lamenting the terrible condition they are living in.

One of the soldiers said, "We are living in very bad conditions. The food they give us is terrible. The heat here is terrible. And I find it difficult to stay alert and concentrate on the job because every time I talk to my wife, she is always crying, asking me when will I come home to see my children."

Most of the soldiers lamented being the battlefield for over six months with no idea of when they will be re-posted to another battalion.

One of the soldiers in Borno said his wife gave birth a month after he was posted to the troubled area and he's been there for ten months. He has not seen his child nor wife since they can't come to visit him.

Most of the soldiers were of the opinion that soldiers should be deployed for a maximum of four months at a time.A soldier in Yobe said, "We’re not the only soldiers in this country, why are they not letting us rest after a while so that others can come and try?"

Another officer said he knew that sacrificing his leisure for the peace and unity of the country comes the job but they also need rest after some time as they can't operate without rest and that's why others should be mobilized to come and serve.

“It seems we are not ready to face-out insurgency in this country,” said one soldier who added that he was tired and frustrated.

More than 350 houses submerged, 1,000 displaced by flood in Calabar

An unprecedented flood has wreaked havoc in Calabar metropolis, Cross River State, destroying over 350 houses and displacing about 1,000 persons. The ravaging flood, which occurred following a six-hour downpour yesterday morning, adversely affected mobility in most parts of the city.
Areas worst hit by the flood include Target-Goldie and Mayne Avenue, Marian road, Diamond Hill axis, Ete-Agbor street MCC, Wapi junction Marian and Ediba within Calabar South and Municipal council.
Also affected were Yellow Duke, some departments in the University of Calabar and the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) staff quarters in Calabar South Local Government which were submerged.
The flood destroyed valuable household items and goods worth several millions of naira, and sacked the residents from their homes. Items including electrical appliances, mattresses, kitchen utensils, clothes and foodstuffs were seen floating just as some were washed away.
When Daily Sun visited the Goldie-Target area, some of the residents affected were seen trying to salvage some of their belongings while children and the elderly trapped in the flood were being evacuated to nearby Bogobiri community and open spaces along Goldie s,treet for safety.
Some of the victims said that they were taken by surprise as it occurred in the early hours of the day when many of them  could not salvage their  properties. Checks revealed that most of the residents including women and children  spent the night in the open, while some of them wept profusely over their losses.
The flooding was principally caused by blocked drainages  and the narrow nature of some channels which could not contain the high volume of water. One of victims, Mrs. Theresa Idum, a widow, lamented the loss of her property which collapsed due to the flood. She appealed to the State Government to help her rebuild the house.
Mrs. Idum said: “I have lost all that I labored for. Nothing is left for me. Please let government help me.” Another victim, Mrs. Grace Minika, whose compound of five buildings were ravaged and part of the walls pulled down, said that the flood found its way to their homes through a broken wall on another street.
Assessing the extent of the damage, the Director Genera of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. Vincent Aquah, said it was high time residents started taking some precautionary measures especially as we approach the rainy season.
He promised to liaise with relevant agencies to tackle the problem.

Joblessness responsible for terrorism – Gov. Amaechi

RIVERS State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi
RIVERS State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has attributed the lack of opportunities for Nigerian youths to the increasing level of terrorism in the country.
Amaechi explained that the provision of equal opportunities to Nigerians to do legitimate business and earn income would address the crisis in the country.

The governor spoke when the United States Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau for Conflict Stabilization and Operations, Washington DC, Mr. Rick Barton, and the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwinstle, led a delegation of diplomats on a visit to Government House in Port Harcourt.

He also urged the Federal Government to add more value to its security operations and conflict reduction strategy in order to achieve the needed peace in the country.
“The Nigerian government needs to do more to reduce conflict.  For me, the way to reduce conflict is not just equity but the ability to provide opportunity for those who don’t have because lack of opportunities increases conflicts.

“If everybody is given nearly equal opportunities to go about their businesses and provide income for themselves, then the Nigerian environment would likely see peace.

“If we don’t provide such opportunities for them, there would be conflicts because poverty is everywhere.  That is what you are seeing in Nigeria,” Amaechi added.
The governor appealed to the ruling class and the elite to make useful contributions that would assist the Federal Government to tackle terrorism in the North-Eastern part of the country.

Earlier, Barton had said he was interested in a peaceful transition of government in future.
Also speaking, Entwinstle expressed the need for the Nigerian government to promote reconciliation as a workable measure towards reducing tension and violence in the country.

Also, the Consul-General of the Ghana High Commission in Nigeria on Monday, Alhaji Abdulai Abukari  blamed insecurity in Nigeria and other West African countries on unregulated movement of stateless people.

The UNHCR recently reported that about  700,000 people in West Africa had no nationalities, while more than five million others were at risk of being stateless.

Abukari told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the increasing number of  people without nationalities across the region was becoming worrisome.
He advised that something urgent should be done to give the affected persons nationalities.

“Statelessness is a situation whereby some persons do not have a state, country or nationality,” he said.

Chibok: Youths protest abduction of schoolgirls

Some Lagos-based indigenes of Kibaki, a community in Chibok town, where 234 girls were abducted from the Federal Government College by Boko Haram, on Monday protested against the act.

The protesters took their grievances to the office of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola in Alausa, Ikeja.

The protesters, who included women and children, under the aegis of the Lagos State chapter of Chibok Youths Association, urged Fashola to pass on their massage to President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State to ensure the safe return of the abducted girls.

Spokesman of the group, Mr. Yahaya Chiwar, said the group was worried that 13 days after the girls were abducted, there had been no positive news from the government concerning their safety or any chance of them being rescued.

He added that what was more pathetic was that after the parents of the abducted girls had taken it upon themselves to conduct a search in the Sambisa Forest, located the camp where the insurgents were holding the girls and reported to the appropriate authorities, no action had been taken.

Chiwar said, “Our parents could not confront the gunmen and therefore informed the security authorities about where the girls were being kept. The parents communicated with us yesterday (Sunday). They said there had been no information on whether the girls had been rescued or not.

“We have resolved that we can no longer remain silent; we are here because of your commitment to security of lives and property in the state. We believe the nearest authority to us is you, we believe we can express our grievances to you and you can forward our grievances to the relevant authorities, particularly to President Jonathan.”

Fashola commended members of the group for their courage and selflessness to stand for their daughters and sisters who were victims of the nation’s porous security system.
He condemned the abduction of the girls, describing it as a clear act of hostage-taking “which is unthinkable and dehumanising”.

He said, “One can only imagine the kind of horror and grief the parents of these girls must be feeling. I am a parent and I understand it. If my children are ill, I know the kind of frustration, fear and anxiety that I go through, not to mention the indescribable emotion that the parents of these girls are going through to know whether they are alive, where they are and what conditions they might be in. The girls themselves – the kind of fear they are going through – it must be a traumatic experience for everyone involved.”

He cautioned the protesters against nursing the thought that nothing was being done to rescue the abducted girls.
He said it was likely that the authorities might be careful not to take steps that would harm the girls while rescuing them.

Fashola  urged the parents of the girls not to lose hope on the safe return of their children.
He promised to deliver the letter to Jonathan on Monday (yesterday).
