The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State is fast losing its members to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the gale of defection that has hit it since President Jonathan and PDP chieftains held unity rally in the state.
The latest defection from APC in the state was at the weekend, when one of its leaders, Chief John Agbasi and over 6,000 members in Umunam Atta community in Njaba Council Area of the state, dumped the party for the PDP.
The defection of Chief Agbasi and other APC faithful came less than two weeks after Chief Cajethan Dike, former member of the House of Representatives and the leader of the party in Oru East and his supporters defected. Recall that Chief Agbasi had decamped alongside former governor of Imo State, Chief Achike Udenwa from the PDP in 2010 to the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
Agbasi and the other members of the APC, were jointly received back into the PDP family by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha; Senator Hope Uzodinma, the member representing /Isu/Nwangele/Njaba Federeal Constituency, Sir Chudi Onyereri and the member representing Njaba state constituency, Kevin Obioha as well as members of the state executive council of the PDP.
Speaking at the event which held at the National Primary School Umunam Atta playground, Chief Ihedioha commended Agbasi for taking a bold step to return back to the house he contributed heavily to build.
Ihedioha, who was represented at the event by his political adviser, Chief Emma Dike, expressed happiness with the decision of the decampees to re- unite with the PDP and urged them not to allow any other party to infiltrate into the area, as “the PDP will reposition the state in 2015.”
Speaking earlier, the state PDP chairman, Nnamdi Anyaehie, assured them that the party has been repositioned and that the interest of all members of the party would be accommodated to avoid the mistakes of the past, which led to the temporary exit of some of its members.
He noted that it was an implosion that had cost the party its governorship victory in 2011, when so many systems were superimposed on the party’s structure making it impossible for people to freely operate. He assured that the party is wearing a new face that is ready to accommodate everyone.
The PDP state chairman, who was represented by the party’s treasurer, Architect Magnus Chilaka, assured that the party must return to the part of justice and fairness, adding that six months into the party’s reign in 2015, all executive chairmen and councilors of local governments must be paid their salaries and allowances.
