| Former Kano State Governor, Alhaji Shekarau |
About 15,000 supporters of a former All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Tuesday defected from the party to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The defectors were from Gwarzo Local Government Area said they decided to follow their leader to PDP after wide consultations with people in the 10 wards in the local government.
Their spokesman, Mallam Mu’azu Abdullahi, told Senate Chief Whip, Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, during their presentation to PDP leaders that among those who defected were former chairmen of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and their secretaries from the 10 wards in the local government.
Others, he added, were women leaders from the 10 wards, ‘ANPP Two’ delegates, hunters and members of the intelligence committee of the party from the 10 wards and all their followers, among others.
In his address while receiving the defectors, Gwarzo commended the defectors for taking the bold step to join the PDP, which he described as the best party for the country.
He said: “PDP is the best party for the people of Nigeria as it is the only party that can transform the country. It is the only party in the country which can meet the aspirations and yearnings of all Nigerians.”
He therefore called on the defectors and other members of the party in the area to shun politics of bitterness, tribalism and religious bigotry to enable the party win the forthcoming elections at all levels.
