Falana charges Nigerians to stigmatize, not celebrate corrupt leaders

Femi Falana
Human Rights Activist and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana yesterday called on Nigerians to stigmatize corrupt leaders instead of celebrating them as is often done across the country.
He made this appeal in Lagos while delivering a keynote address at the Annual Convention and Integrity Awards of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL ).
According to Falana, who spoke on “Institutionalizing Probity and Accountability in Governance,” the participation of the nation’s elite in voting during elections in the country was low.
This led him into declaring that any political party which fails to take the welfare of the people seriously was not fit to be in power and must be voted out.
The Senior Advocate urged that Nigerians must stop celebrating corrupt people and find ways to stigmatize them instead. He emphasized that the government needed to institutionalize a social security scheme as part of efforts to tackle the problem .
Hear him, “Corruption does not reign in countries where you have social security for citizens in place. ”We must build a country where people are entitled to unemployment benefits,” he said.
His address also bordered on the need for proper accountability in Nigerian churches, urging pastors to ensure that they account for church funds and spend them responsibly.
“We must begin to ask questions from pastors using church funds to build universities that their members cannot afford to send their children to,” he said.
