Ceasefire deal signed between South Sudan Government and Rebels

South Sudan's government and rebels signed a ceasefire deal on Thursday to end more than five weeks of fighting that have plunged the new country in to brink of civil war.

The ceasefire deal is expected to be implemented within 24 hours of the signing, mediators said.

The relatively young, oil-rich country erupted into violence when rebels loyal to the ex-Vice-President, Riek Machar tried to stage a coup. The rebels continues to fight the government forces plunging the country to a likely civil war.

According to the U.N, more than 350,000 people have been displaced and rendered homeless, causing serious humanitarian crisis

South Sudan won its independence from Sudan in 2011 after decades of conflict between the northern and southern Sudanese.
